University mourns anthropology graduate student Jack Russell

LAWRENCE — University of Kansas Chancellor Robert Hemenway and Jack Hofman, associate professor of anthropology, released the following statements regarding the death of Jack Russell of Louisburg, a KU graduate student in anthropology who died Feb. 28 at the age of 54.

Hemenway: “Jack Russell brought considerable experience and talent to the Department of Anthropology. His thoughtful mentoring broadened the educational and personal experience of younger students. On behalf of the entire university community, I offer deepest condolences to his wife, Lori, his sons, grandson and the rest of his family and friends.”

Hofman: “Jack was passionate about anthropology, with a focused interest in archaeology. His thesis project concerned a 9,000-year-old bison kill, and he participated in the KU anthropology department archaeological field work every summer since 2004. Jack was a gifted, caring and wonderful individual. He loved people and gained the respect, admiration and friendship of the anthropology faculty, staff and students. He will be dearly missed.”
