KU in the Capitol to showcase university’s work throughout the state

LAWRENCE — Telemedicine services to treat cancer patients in rural areas. Reservoir mapping to ensure safety of water supplies. Pharmacy clerkships in underserved communities.

University of Kansas faculty and staff will showcase these and many other examples of how KU works for Kansas during the fifth annual KU in the Capitol event from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. March 10 in the Statehouse in Topeka.

“KU works for Kansas in so many ways — from training physicians who treat patients throughout the state to preparing law enforcement officers to protect our communities,” Chancellor Robert Hemenway said. “Our commitment to knowledge and learning extends across Kansas and to all ages.”

Legislators and state policymakers are expected to be in attendance at the event, which will be in and around the rotunda on the first and second floors of the Capitol. More than 30 booths representing schools and programs at KU will offer literature, giveaway items, posters and other information that help explain how KU works for Kansas. Demonstrations will include a working telemedicine system from the KU Medical Center and the award-winning race cars designed by students at the School of Engineering.

Also during KU in the Capitol, Hemenway and Richard Lariviere, provost and executive vice chancellor, will join the House of Representatives in honoring former state representative and alumnus Carl Krehbiel of Moundridge for his service to KU and the state. In addition to a $4 million donation to build a scholarship hall at KU, Krehbiel recently donated $400,000 to establish a maintenance endowment for the building.

“Rep. Krehbiel had the forethought to protect this building from being added to the long list of those needing maintenance,” Hemenway said. “This farsighted generosity is indicative of his long tradition of service to his school, his state and his country.”

Maintenance of the KU campuses remains a top priority for the university this legislative session. Warren Corman, university architect, and James Modig, director of Design and Construction Management, will be on hand at the Capitol event to explain how KU is using state money allocated in 2007 for deferred maintenance as well as to demonstrate continued needs. The university faces an estimated maintenance backlog of $200 million.
