KU electrical engineering professor receives Graduate Educator Award

LAWRENCE — Costas Tsatsoulis, professor and chair of electrical engineering and computer science at the University of Kansas, received the 2008 Louise Byrd Graduate Educator Award.
KU’s Office of Research and Graduate Studies announced the honor during the doctoral hooding ceremony May 17.
Established in 1984 to honor Louise Byrd, longtime secretary of the former Graduate School and Graduate Council, the award recognizes an exceptional level of commitment and concern for the welfare and scholarship of graduate students. The award includes a $1,000 prize.
Tsatsoulis is a researcher in the Intelligenta Systems Laboratory at KU’s Information and Telecommunication Technology Center. His research interests include multiagent systems, artificial intelligence, case-based reasoning, machine learning and image classification.
He has received numerous awards including a National Aeronautics and Space Administration grant to design advanced data collection coalitions of sensors. Tsatsoulis was a KU representative on a multi-university and multidisciplinary team that developed sensors and autonomous vehicles to study the polar ice sheets. Their research was funded by NASA and the National Science Foundation.
At KU, Tsatsoulis has received the Miller Scholar Award in 2007, the Spahr professorship in engineering from 2000 to 2003, the Bellows Fellowship in 1999 and Miller Award for Research Excellence in 1994. He also received the AT&T Engineering Education Excellence Award from the state of Kansas in 1995.
Tsatsoulis is an alumnus of Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind., where he earned doctoral, master’s and bachelor’s degrees in electrical engineering and a bachelor’s in German.
