Four KU students selected to lead 2008-09 Board of Class Officers

LAWRENCE — Four University of Kansas students have been selected as senior class officers and will lead the Board of Class Officers for 2008-09.

The officers are Rachel Burchfield, Topeka, president; Todd Crawford, Leawood, vice president; Paige Ward, Tecumseh, treasurer; and George Lewis, Prairie Village, secretary.

Board of Class Officers activities promote student life, and its awards recognize excellence among students, faculty and staff.

Among the Board of Class Officers honors are:

— The H.O.P.E. Award (Honor for an Outstanding Progressive Educator) recognizes outstanding teaching and concern for students. Established by the Class of 1959, it is the only honor for teaching excellence given exclusively by seniors on the Lawrence campus. Winners are selected through a ballot-and-interview process and recognized at a fall football game.

— The C.L.A.S.S. Award (Citation for Leadership and Achievement in Student Services) is presented at a men’s basketball game to an unclassified staff member who works in a department or organization overseen by Student Success. Established by the Class of 1987, it recognizes distinguished achievements in student services that show a commitment to the needs of KU students and contribute to the welfare of students.

— The Campanile Award is given annually in May to a graduating senior for leadership, character and respect for KU. The Class of 2000 established the award.

— The Ex.C.E.L. Awards (Excellence in Community Education and Leadership) are $500 student-funded honors given jointly by the class officers, Student Union Activities and the homecoming steering committee. The awards are given to two seniors at the KU homecoming football game in the fall.

The Board of Class Officers also creates the class banners carried during the spring commencement processional and select the senior class gift to the university.

Lori Reesor, associate vice provost for Student Success, and Clinton Everhart, assistant director for Office of Student Financial Aid, are advisers for the board.
