Media advisory: Monarch Watch to hold open house and fundraiser Saturday

WHO: Monarch Watch, an educational outreach program at the University of Kansas that engages citizen scientists in large-scale research projects.

WHAT: An open house and plant fundraiser featuring activities for children, with the special assistance of Brenda Mott from the Children’s Museum of Kansas City (from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.).

The event will feature live exotic and local insects, videos of monarchs and bees, a honeybee observation hive and 4,000 continuously blooming butterfly and hummingbird plants that visitors may purchase for their gardens and as Mother’s Day gifts. The standard plants are available for modest donations in the range of $3 to $4 each. Monarch Watch also has large Lantana and Pentas as well as “spicebushes” that serve as host plants for the spicebush swallowtail butterfly. These are available for larger contributions.
