KU urban planning graduate student selected as Sustainable Energy Fellow

LAWRENCE — A University of Kansas graduate student in urban planning was one of 40 students selected nationally for a Sustainable Energy Fellowship to explore the technologies, policies and economics of sustainable energy.

As a Sustainable Energy Fellow, Susan Anne Gelvin, master’s degree student in the School of Architecture and Urban Planning, will attend a intensive program May 24-31 at Duke University in North Carolina. Gelvin received a bachelor’s degree in environmental studies from KU in December 2006. She is the daughter of Ralph and Joann Gelvin of Lawrence.

Researchers from Arizona State University, Cornell University, Duke, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Michigan designed and direct the fellowship. The program is held on alternating campuses from year to year.

Students are exposed to research and education in energy production, conversion, storage and sources that are environmentally friendly and renewable such as wind, solar, biomass and geothermal.

Leading practitioners from industry, government and other agencies supplement the learning experience by providing divergent points of view and technical expertise.

Expenses for accepted students are underwritten by Shell and Ford Motor companies.
