Public invited to participate in coordinated transit planning open houses
LAWRENCE — The public will have the opportunity to weigh in on the planning of a coordinated transit system between the University of Kansas and the city of Lawrence at two upcoming events.
Anyone with an interest in public transportation in Lawrence is invited to two open houses being held to gather input. Volunteers, students and staff will be on hand to gather ideas from the attendees on the future of public transportation in Lawrence.
The planning team working on a coordinated transit system is looking for input on six issues, including route planning and scheduling, vehicle options, the mission of transit in the community, policies, service areas and strengths and weaknesses of current transit systems.
The city and KU are working to create a coordinated or consolidated system that will bring together the Lawrence Transit System and KU on Wheels to provide improved service to citizens and students.
The first meeting will be from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9, at the Big 12 Room in the Kansas Union. The union is accessible by all KU on Wheels off-campus routes and on Lawrence Transit System route 8. Parking in the Mississippi Street parking garage will be free during the meeting. The parking garage is attached to the Kansas Union.
The second meeting will be from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 11, at Lawrence Public Library, 707 Vermont St. The library is on Lawrence Transit System routes 3, 4 and 6-counter clockwise; a two-block walk from routes 1, 4, 6-clockwise, 7 and 8; and a two-block walk from KU on Wheels route 25.
Both meetings will follow an open house format. Participants are invited to come and go anytime during the meeting. Attendees will be asked to complete worksheets to provide input and will be able to talk with team members about the issues.
Individuals unable to attend the open houses may provide comment at www.getonthebuslawrence.org beginning Nov. 26. Individuals may complete the input survey at www.getonthebuslawrence.org beginning Dec. 9. The deadline for completing the survey for initial input will be Jan. 9.
The University of Kansas is a major comprehensive research and teaching university. University Relations is the central public relations office for KU's Lawrence campus.
