Expert to discuss water issues facing Kansas

LAWRENCE — When it comes to nonrenewable resources, most people think of coal and oil. Now, water might need to be added to the list.

In some areas of Kansas, water is being used far faster than it could ever be replaced naturally. That’s already affecting the agricultural economy of the state, said Rex Buchanan, deputy director of the Kansas Geological Survey. People are learning to be more efficient in their use of water and, in some areas, have changed to less thirsty crops or sold their water rights.

Buchanan will lead a talk and discussion about the state of Kansas water at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3, at the KU Natural History Museum. The event is free.

Buchanan’s experiences with water issues in Kansas range from various water-related task forces, travels across the state, conversations with Kansans, sampling springs and assisting with water measurements in wells.

“There are no easy solutions to the water situation Kansans face now, or what they’ll encounter in the future,” he said. “If you want to understand what’s involved, it means taking a look at a complex mix of water use, landscape, personalities and economics.”

His talk, “Water on the Plains: Struggles and Stories from Kansas,” is part of the museum’s monthly Wild Science series. Held the first Wednesday of each month, the series offers a chance for the public to ask questions directly to researchers in an informal setting. Coffee, hot chocolate and cookies will be served.
