Audio-Reader honors longtime volunteers
LAWRENCE — Audio-Reader at the University of Kansas recently hosted a Volunteer Appreciation Dinner to celebrate the organization’s long history and the contributions of its 350 volunteers.
Twenty-two volunteers were honored for five to 25 years of service. They are:
For five years: Nancy Biles, Ruby Ducate, Bruce Frey, Mike Grahovac, Steve Jack, Patrick Musick, John Naughtin, Jim O’Malley, Phil Wilke and Susan Zvacek of Lawrence; Edith Bond of Baldwin City; and Michael Seely of Oakland, Calif.
For 10 years: Harlan Roedel of Lawrence; Harriet Mark of Tonganoxie; and Rex Swartz of Kansas City, Mo.
For 15 years: Maggie Carttar, John Drees and Mary K Ridgway of Lawrence
For 20 years: Harry Talley of Lawrence
For 25 years: Stuart Mills, Mary Ann Strong and Jean Van Lew of Lawrence
Audio-Reader was founded by Lawrence philanthropist Petey Cerf and started broadcasting from the KU campus on Oct. 11, 1971. Since then, the organization has grown to offer programming 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Audio-Reader provides recordings of newspapers, books and magazines to people in Kansas and northwest Missouri who are blind or have other visual impairments.
