KU staffer named fellow of national geological organization
LAWRENCE — Rex Buchanan, deputy director for outreach and public service at the Kansas Geological Survey, based at the University of Kansas, has been named a fellow of the Geological Society of America.
The Geological Society of America is a worldwide association with nearly 20,000 members in 85 countries. The organization promotes the geosciences and provides a forum for diverse ideas. Fellows are chosen in recognition of their distinguished contributions to the advancement of the geosciences through publications, presentations, leadership in professional organizations, teaching and promotion of scientific advances to the public.
Responsible for making the scientific community, educators, decision-makers and the public aware of the Kansas Geological Survey’s research and the state’s geology, Buchanan oversees production and distribution of books and maps, the survey’s online resources and public activities.
Buchanan has edited, written or co-authored articles and books, including “Roadside Kansas” and “Kansas Geology,” published by the University Press of Kansas, and has served on numerous committees addressing natural resource issues. He is a member of the Kansas Energy Council and the Midwest Governors Association’s Renewable Electricity, Advanced Coal and Carbon Capture Advisory Group.
Buchanan, a native of Little River, has been at the Kansas Geological Survey since 1978. He was presented the fellowship at the Geological Society of America’s annual meeting earlier this month in Houston.
The University of Kansas is a major comprehensive research and teaching university. University Relations is the central public relations office for KU's Lawrence campus.
