Former President Bush to accept Dole Leadership Prize at KU

LAWRENCE — Former President George H.W. Bush will accept the 2008 Dole Leadership Prize next month at the Dole Institute of Politics at the University of Kansas.

The prize will be awarded on the afternoon of Sunday, Nov. 16, at the Lied Center. More details will be announced soon.

“We’re thrilled to have former President George H.W. Bush come to KU to receive the Dole Leadership Prize,” said Chancellor Robert Hemenway. “He provided leadership as president during a time of great change in the world, witnessing the fall of the Soviet Union and the challenges that followed. Former President Bush is a worthy recipient of this prize and we are eager to welcome him to KU.”

Bush is the second president to visit the Dole Institute, according to Bill Lacy, director of the institute. President Bill Clinton was at the institute in 2004 and delivered the inaugural Robert J. Dole Lecture. Former President Jimmy Carter also attended ceremonies celebrating the opening of the institute.

“The president had a long career in public service and is perfect for this award,” Lacy said.

The Dole Institute of Politics is a bipartisan institute dedicated to promoting public service, civic engagement and politics. It is located on KU’s west campus next to the Lied Center.
