Dole Institute to finish year with visit from former president Bush
LAWRENCE — The Dole Institute of Politics at the University of Kansas has announced its schedule of programs to wrap up an election-focused fall.
The main event will be the annual Dole Leadership Prize, which will be awarded to former president George H.W. Bush. This program will be held Sunday, Nov. 16, at the Lied Center. Further details will be announced shortly, but there is a tentative program time of 3 p.m.
“Following such a focused and successful schedule of election programs, we are looking forward to the events we have to finish the year,” said Bill Lacy, director of the Dole Institute. “We are especially pleased George H.W. Bush will be here to receive our 2008 Dole Leadership Prize. He will be the second president to visit the Dole Institute, and we are honored.”
Former President Bill Clinton has also visited the Dole Institute.
The institute will also kick off a new series: Leadership and Globalization in Sports with guest speaker Paul Tagliabue, former commissioner of the National Football League. Tagliabue will comment on his time as NFL commissioner and how globalization is affecting the sports world. This program will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13, at the institute.
“The program will explore issues like sports leadership, doping, sports as a universal language to bridge political gaps, globalization of various sports and other similar topics,” said Lacy.
The Dole Institute’s second Post-Election Conference will focus on the presidential election on Thursday and Friday, Dec. 4 and 5.
“We’ll feature representatives of the major campaigns as well as political strategists, journalists and pollsters,” said Lacy. “I believe people will find the discussion extraordinarily compelling.”
The event will be open to the public but will have limited seating. The Dole Institute will announce more details later.
In addition, two prominent authors will speak at the institute. Al Regnery will discuss his book “Upstream: The Ascendance of Conservatism and its Future” on Wednesday, Nov. 19. Linda Robinson, an expert on national security issues, will discuss “Tell Me How This Ends” on Tuesday, Dec. 2. Her book explores the world of Gen. David Petraeus as he searches for a successful resolution to the Iraq War.
