School of Business appoints teaching fellows

LAWRENCE — Lecturers Mark Haug and Kelly Welch have been appointed School of Business Teaching Fellows at the University of Kansas.

The Teaching Fellows program, established last spring, honors outstanding teaching by nontenure track faculty members who have terminal degrees. Honorees receive the title of teaching fellow and a small annual stipend.

“It’s such a nice distinction to have,” Haug said. “I enjoy teaching a lot and to have that recognized is an honor.”

From the nominees, the Administrative Committee and the Faculty Advisory Committee voted unanimously on Haug and Welch.

“Teaching is what I love to do most,” Welch said. “I spend most of my time trying to figure out the best way to improve the classes here, what new classes we can add and how we can make the existing classes better for students, so that’s why it’s an honor for me.”

Welch has a doctorate in finance and economics from the University of Chicago. This semester, he teaches two courses in finance.

Haug has a law degree from KU and a doctorate from the University of Colorado. This semester, Haug teaches a statistics course and a supply chain management course.

“Mark and Kelly are exceptional teachers, valued citizens of the school, and deserving of this special recognition,” said William Fuerst, dean of the School of Business.
