Previous recipients of the Dole Prize include legendary civil rights activist and U.S. Rep. John Lewis, D-Ga.; former U.S. Senate Majority Leader Howard Baker, R- Tenn.; former Republican presidential candidate and New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, former South Dakota senator and 1972 Democratic presidential nominee George McGovern, and Nobel Peace Prize winner and first democratically elected president of Poland Lech Walesa.

President Bill Clinton delivered the inaugural Robert J. Dole Lecture in 2004 and former President Jimmy Carter attended the institute’s dedication in 2003. Bush last spoke at KU in 1976 when he was CIA director and gave a Vickers Lecture at the School of Business.
