Late Night in the Phog fans asked to help stock food pantries
LAWRENCE — University of Kansas basketball fans attending the annual Late Night in the Phog on Friday, Oct. 17, are being asked to help Lawrence area food pantries by donating nonperishable food items.
Doors open at 5:30 p.m. at Allen Fieldhouse. People’s Bank and Channel 6 News sponsor Late Night, the celebration of the beginning of practice for men’s and women’s basketball.
Admission is free but everyone attending is asked to bring canned or packaged nonperishable food items to be shared with local pantries. Items needed include meats and fish; chili or stews; vegetables and fruit; peanut butter; spaghetti sauce; fruit juices; oatmeal; crackers; dry or evaporated milk; rice; and low-sugar, high-fiber cereals.
This fall, three KU faculty and staff members are working with Kansas Athletics Inc. and KU’s Center for Community Outreach to encourage better coordination of campus food drives with a goal of providing a steady stream of food to area food pantries. The coordination effort is led by Ann Weick, dean emeritus of the School of Social Welfare; Angela Lumpkin, the Gene A. Budig teaching professor in education; and Marlesa Roney, vice provost for Student Success.
The University of Kansas is a major comprehensive research and teaching university. University Relations is the central public relations office for KU's Lawrence campus.
