KU to host two Duke TIP Scholar Weekends this fall

LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas is hosting two “Scholar Weekends” for the Duke University Talent Identification Program this fall.

The Scholar Weekends, scheduled for Oct 3-5 and Nov. 7-9, will offer intensive courses taught by KU instructors. The program will challenge students academically while allowing them to get a taste of university life.

Students in grades 8-12 who have been identified as gifted or talented by local school criteria or have participated in Duke’s Talent Identification Program can attend Scholar Weekends. Students will choose one of the following as a course of study:

— Art and Its History, Sarah Crawford-Parker, associate director of the University Honors Program
— Key Questions of Physics, Dave Besson, professor of physics and astronomy
— King Arthur: An Interdisciplinary View, Mark Daly, associate director of the University Honors Program
— Magazine Design, Carol Holstead, associate professor of journalism
— Mathematics, Games and Strategy, Jeremy Martin, assistant professor of mathematics
— Presidential Elections and American Democracy, Allen Cigler, Political Science
— Religion in Society, Sandra Wick, associate director of the University Honors Program
— “When Dick and Jane Compete in the Same Sport, Why is Jane More Likely to Rupture Her Ligament?,” Lorin Maletsky, associate professor of mechanical engineering

The participants will arrive on campus Friday evening; take part in class work all day Saturday and until 1 p.m. Sunday. They spend the night in the Lawrence Econo Lodge, supervised by resident counselors. The cost for each weekend is $395 with overnight lodging or $365 without lodging.
