KU alumnus returns to campus to give poetry reading

LAWRENCE — Jazz poet Kevin Rabas will perform work from his book “Bird’s Horn and Other Poems” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25, at the Hawk’s Nest in the Kansas Union on the University of Kansas campus. He will be accompanied by percussionist Jorge Ballester. The event is free and open to the public.

Rabas, who holds a doctorate in English from KU, is an assistant professor of literature and creative writing at Emporia State University. He also is a jazz drummer who has performed with Bryan Hicks, Myra Taylor, Chris Hudson, Lisa Moritz and Sharon James.

Mike Metheny, editor of Jazz Ambassador magazine, writes of Rabas, “There are good musicians who can’t write. And there are good writers who can’t play a musical instrument. Kevin Rabas is a good writer who is a good musician, which puts him in a special class.”

Rabas’ writing and performance work is featured on the CD “Last Road Trip.” Samples can be heard at www.cdbaby.com/cd/rabas. More information on his work can be found at www.kevinrabas.com.

The event is sponsored by KU’s Department of English.
