Dole Institute sponsors events to promote civic engagement

LAWRENCE – With a historic election just weeks away, the Dole Institute of Politics and the Student Civic Engagement Council have planned a full schedule of events designed to increase civic participation at the University of Kansas.

This year’s theme is “Civic Engagement and Election 2008.” Programs and activities are planned Sept. 26 through Oct. 15, providing opportunities for students and community members to get involved and to discuss ways in which they can facilitate the growth of civic responsibility inside and outside the classroom.

The main focus will be to get students involved in the election process through voter registration, turning out to vote, participating in Debate Watch activities and discussing current issues affecting the United States.

“Not only are we educating our students, but we are providing opportunities for them to become involved, to be civically engaged,” said Barbara Ballard, associate director of the Institute. “Nationally, we want to increase the participation of the 18- to 24-year-olds. They made an impact in the 2004 and 2006 elections, and it is expected that the youth vote will continue to increase and make a difference in Election 2008.”

Major events include voter registration every day in front of Wescoe Hall, Debate Watch (presidential and vice presidential debates on Sept. 26, Oct. 2, 7, 15) and election programs. Another event is the Student Civic Leadership Breakfast on Oct. 13 for campus leaders and potential leaders focusing on the importance of civic engagement.
