Acclaimed editors to speak at KU’s Hall Center for the Humanities
LAWRENCE — The Department of English’s graduate program in creative writing and the Hall Center for the Humanities at the University of Kansas will welcome two speakers to campus during Editing Week.
Lorin Stein, senior editor at Farrar, Straus and Giroux, will speak at 3:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19, at the Conference Hall in the Hall Center. Stein has edited books by Richard Price, Mischa Berlinski, Sam Lipsyte, Jeffrey Eugenides, Lydia Davis and Clancy Martin. He also has edited translations of works by Roberto Bolano, Mario Vargas Llosa, Etgar Keret and David Grossman. His criticism and translations have appeared in the New York Review of Books, the New Republic, n+1 and other magazines.
Eli Horowitz is the publisher of McSweeney’s, an independent publishing house based in San Francisco. Over the past six years, he has edited books and stories by Dave Eggers, William Vollmann, Nick Hornby, Michael Chabon, Joyce Carol Oates, Chris Adrian and Salvador Plascencia. Horowitz designs most McSweeney’s books himself, along with his three-person editorial staff. His design work has been honored by I.D. Print and the American Institute of Graphic Arts. Horowitz’s lecture, titled “My Role as Publisher, Designer and Editor at McSweeney’s Publishing House,” will take place at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24, at the Conference Hall in the Hall Center.
Both events are free and open to the public.
