Panel discussion to focus on future of Pakistan

LAWRENCE — The upheaval in Pakistan’s political system is the subject of an upcoming panel discussion sponsored by International Programs at the University of Kansas.

“Pakistan Panel II: Beyond Musharraf” will take place from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9, at the Kansas Room in the Kansas Union. The event is free and open to the public.

The discussion will focus on Pakistan’s future after the resignation of President Pervez Musharraf. Panelists are: Rauf Arif, a journalism graduate student from Pakistan who is at KU on a Fulbright grant; Bill Lambert, assistant professor, Department of Joint, Interagency and Multinational Operations, Fort Leavenworth; Phil Schrodt, professor of political science at KU; and Lamia Zia, a journalist from Pakistan. The panel is the sequel to last year’s well-attended “Turmoil in Pakistan: What are the Options?”

“The situation in Pakistan is critical to U.S. interests and security,” said Hodgie Bricke, associate vice provost for International Programs. “For that reason, International Programs feels it is important to have a second informative panel in the aftermath of the Pakistan presidential election this weekend that will utilize our resources from Fort Leavenworth and KU.”
