Hawk Week helps KU students ease back into academics
LAWRENCE — New and returning University of Kansas students will be welcomed to campus during Hawk Week, Aug. 16-22.
It all begins when residence and scholarship halls open Sunday, Aug. 16. Classes start Thursday, Aug. 20.
In addition to helping students ease back into the school year, Hawk Week is designed to smooth the transition to college life. All events are free.
A complete schedule of Hawk Week events is available at www.hawkweek.ku.edu. Check the online schedule for any changes in times or locations.
This year, highlights include:
Sunday, Aug. 16
Unionfest: Seasons of a Jayhawk
8-11 p.m., Kansas Union
Experience the seasons as you explore the Kansas Union. There will be prizes, a mini-carnival and an indoor ice skating rink.
Monday, Aug. 17
Ice Cream Social
6-7:30 p.m., Adams Alumni Center
Enjoy free ice cream, giveaways, music, games and fun.
Traditions Night
8 p.m., Memorial Stadium
Learn all the songs, cheers and yells to be a true Jayhawk.
Night On The Hill: Passion Pit
9 p.m., Campanile Hill
A free concert for all students, faculty and staff. Passion Pit is a world-renowned five-piece electro-pop outfit.
Tuesday, Aug. 18
Rec Fest and Info Fair
7-9 p.m., Ambler Student Recreation Fitness Center
Check out the rec center and visit with representatives from various schools and departments to learn more about what KU has to offer.
Rock-A-Hawk
11 p.m.-1 a.m., Daisy Hill
Daisy Hill will be jumping with music, snacks and games.
Wednesday, Aug. 19
Take Over the Beach
1-4 p.m., Wescoe Beach
Entertainment and information on how to become involved with cultural organizations, including African-American and Latino sororities and fraternities, UNITY Hip-Hop Dance Troupe and the Inspirational Gospel Voices Choir.
Roll with Dole
6-7:30 p.m., Dole Institute of Politics
Find out about Dole Institute events and enjoy free dessert, fun and games.
The 144th Opening Convocation
7:30-8:30 p.m., Lied Center
See Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little give her first formal address to the university.
Thursday, Aug. 20
Greening the Crimson and Blue
2-4 p.m., Ambler Student Recreation Fitness Center
Stop by the Student Rain Garden to learn about initiatives under way to make our campus more environmentally responsible.
Friday, Aug. 21
Family Arts Festival
6 p.m., Lied Center
Learn about organizations and opportunities at KU and in the Lawrence area that feature the arts.
Outdoor concert
7 p.m., Lied Center
Free concert featuring 18-year-old Amanda Shaw, a jazz-blues fiddler.
Movie on the Hill
9 p.m., Daisy Hill
Watch "Star Trek" outside on the big screen and enjoy popcorn.
Saturday, Aug. 22
Center for Community Outreach service project
9:45 a.m.-2:30 p.m., fourth floor, Kansas Union
Volunteers will be bused to community organizations to spend the day working on service projects.
The University of Kansas is a major comprehensive research and teaching university. University Relations is the central public relations office for KU's Lawrence campus.
