College of Liberal Arts and Sciences announces scholarship, award winners
LAWRENCE — The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Kansas honored 73 students with more than $77,000 in scholarships and awards this spring. All the scholarship recipients and most award winners are attending classes at KU this fall.
The scholarships and awards, which are made possible by gifts to KU Endowment from alumni and friends, were awarded based on merit, need or both.
“These students represent the most talented young scholars in the College. I am grateful that we are able to offer this support to foster their success,” said Interim Dean Gregory B. Simpson.
Several general scholarships or awards were available to freshmen, sophomores and juniors, in addition to other scholarships and awards with specific criteria. Scholarships provide funds that may be used for tuition expenses only. Awards provide cash that may be used without restrictions.
The general scholarships, known collectively as the College Scholarships, include those established in memory of Verne I. Wagner Bratton, John P. Feighner, Meldon L. Glenn, Wheeler Russell Gregory, Paul B. Lawson, Adolph James Spangler, Suzanne H. Tholen and Department of English faculty. Other scholarships and awards available from the College include:
— Martha Cook Clarke Scholarships, awarded to students majoring in humanities and social sciences
— Engelmann Science Scholarships, awarded to second- and third-year undergraduate students studying science
— Hilden Gibson Award, given to a junior or senior with outstanding scholarship in the social sciences who plans to continue his or her education at KU after graduation
— Mary Lou Miller Graves Scholarship, awarded to students studying arts and humanities with a preference given to graduates of Kansas or Missouri high schools
— Robert Charles Jarvis M.D. Memorial Scholarship, awarded to students in the College with a preference given to undergraduates who are graduates of Kansas high schools
— Terri Knoll Johnson Memorial Scholarship, awarded to a female student with a dependent child
— Veta B. Lear Memorial Award, given to a freshman with a 4.0 grade-point average during his or her first year
— Max A. Miller Medical Scholarship, awarded to students preparing to study medicine, who have demonstrated above-average academic ability and a serious intent to complete all academic requirements to obtain a medical degree
— Neta Reinhardt Scholarship, awarded to a Kansas resident undergraduate woman studying in the College
— C.E. Spahr Scholarship in the Sciences, awarded to students preparing to obtain degrees in sciences outside of the engineering school
— Kate Stephens Fellowship Award, given to a graduating senior planning graduate studies in literature, history or ethics
— Helen C. Telfel Scholarship, awarded to two undergraduate students majoring in a foreign language
— Betty Wahlstedt Student Memorial award, given to a graduating senior planning graduate study in the behavioral sciences
— Allen S. Wilber Scholarship, awarded to a graduating senior pursuing graduate study at KU with a preference given to students planning graduate work in a social science field or modern languages and literature
The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences enrolls more than 17,000 students and encompasses more than 55 departments, programs, centers and the School of the Arts. Nearly half of the students at KU earn their bachelor’s degrees from the College. Courses in the College cover hundreds of subjects including history, literature, chemistry, biology, art history, mathematics, anthropology, psychology, foreign languages and political science.
Funds for the awards and scholarships are managed by KU Endowment, the independent, nonprofit foundation serving as the official fundraising and fund-management organization for KU. Founded in 1891, KU Endowment is the first foundation of its kind at a U.S. public university.
The scholarship and award recipients to be honored by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences are listed below by hometown, level in school or degree earned, major, parents’ names and high schools. Students with several awards and/or scholarships are listed multiple times.
