More Information

LAWRENCE — A University of Kansas student is one of five sorority women chosen by the National Panhellenic Conference for its newly launched Web site to educate the public about the benefits of sorority life.

Britta Hill, a sophomore from Hinsdale, Ill., preparing to study elementary education and a member of Chi Omega sorority, was selected by the national group’s leaders from among more than 400 applicants nationwide. The five profiles are online at www.MyCollegeLifestyle.com.

The National Panhellenic Conference launched the project to help women make informed choices about sorority options as they enter college, especially for those seeking accurate information from women living the sorority experience. Applicants wrote about how greek organizations have enriched their lives.

“The women featured on our site also reflect how diverse our community is on college campuses,” said Eve Riley, chair of the organization.

Hill applied at the suggestion of Cyndi Myers, president of the Hinsdale Area Alumnae Panhellenic Association.

“Going to college is a new and very different experience for many people, but I hope that this site can help young women prepare for college life and inspire them to join a sorority,” Hill said. “I’m honored to be considered a role model and so lucky the way my college choices have worked out.”

Before she enrolled at KU, Hill had never been away from her Chicago-area home for more than a week. No one in her family had attended KU. Her high school friends chose a university closer to home. Taking an opposite path was difficult at first for her, and she credited her sorority affiliation with a happy transition to KU.

“I never thought I would become such good friends with complete strangers,” Hills said. “I have learned the benefits, networks and opportunities a sorority can provide. I always have support during the good times and bad.”

A graduate of Hinsdale Township Central High School, Hill is the daughter of Tony and Barbara Hill, who was a Chi Omega member at Iowa State University. The Hills visited KU at the suggestion of Kevin Koehler, guidance counselor at Hinsdale Central, who knew Britta wanted to major in elementary education. She hopes to teach second or third grade.

“When I visited KU, I immediately knew this was where I wanted to be,” Hill said. “What the School of Education offered just blew me away. I can’t imagine being any place else.”

Hill will be the 2010-11 new member educator for her sorority chapter. An honor roll student, she has volunteered with second-graders at Langston Hughes Elementary School in Lawrence. She is a member of the KU women’s lacrosse team, a sport she played in high school and someday hopes to coach.

Thirteen KU sororities are affiliated with the National Panhellenic Conference, based in Indianapolis. For more information, go to www.npcwomen.org.
