Just like men’s basketball team, KU debaters win at K-State

LAWRENCE — The men’s basketball team was not the only University of Kansas group to have a successful weekend at Kansas State University in Manhattan. KU debaters took the first-place team trophy at the Soul of America debate tournament hosted Feb. 13-15 by K-State.

Brett Bricker, a senior from Wichita, and Mark Wilkins, a sophomore from Topeka, won first place overall in the tournament by winning eight debates over three days. Bricker won the award for best individual debater.

Andrew Jack, a junior from Lawrence and Manhattan, and Tim Ellis, a freshman from Manhattan, finished in fifth place. Jack was the eighth-place individual debater, and Patrick Kennedy, a sophomore from Leawood, was ninth individually. In the junior varsity division, Denise DeArmond, a freshman from Augusta and El Dorado, and Seth Winkler, a freshman from Wichita, took fifth place.

In addition to KU and K-State, other schools competing at the tournament were Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, Kansas City Kansas Community College, University of Central Oklahoma, the University of North Texas, University of Oklahoma, University of Texas-San Antonio and Wichita State University.
