Floyd H. and Kathryn Krehbiel Scholarship Hall (Jaclyn Lippelmann/University Relations)

LAWRENCE — Two facilities at the University of Kansas have been recognized with awards from College Planning and Management magazine.

The Floyd H. and Kathryn Krehbiel Scholarship Hall was the 2009 grand-prize winner for outstanding design and architecture in education. The article compliments the way the hall “blends seamlessly into a historic neighborhood that surrounds the University of Kansas.”

Opened in 2008, the hall was made possible by former state representative and 1970 KU alumnus Carl C. Krehbiel. A former scholarship hall resident, he made a $4 million gift to KU Endowment to establish the hall in honor of his parents. Krehbiel also made a $400,000 contribution to establish a maintenance fund for the facility.

The hall, which houses 50 male students, was constructed as a mirror image to the adjacent Dennis E. Rieger Scholarship Hall, which houses 50 female students.The hall was designed by Treanor Architects of Lawrence.

The Multidisciplinary Research Building was awarded honorable mention for outstanding design and architecture in education.

The 106,000-square-foot building, developed by Cannon Design and Gould Evans Associates, was dedicated in March 2006. It houses more than 175 faculty, students and research staff. The facility encourages collaboration among researchers of varying disciplines such as drug discovery and delivery, bioinformatics, chemistry, molecular bioscience and geology.

“The MRB serves a vital function as an anchor point at the edge of the campus, acting as a key component in fulfilling the vision of the West Campus Master Plan,” the article states. “Openness and transparency are valued by the university, and the building opens its arms and reaches toward the future campus promenade and distant views.”
