KU pharmacy camp attracts high school students from five states

LAWRENCE – Twenty-two junior and senior high school students from five states were in Lawrence to participate in the University of Kansas School of Pharmacy Summer Camp June 14 through 19.

Nine boys and 13 girls from Kansas, Illinois, Texas, Nebraska and Oklahoma learned what pharmacists do in their daily routines, education skills needed to become a pharmacist and the ethics and professionalism standards that guide the pharmacy profession. Gene Hotchkiss, associate dean of pharmacy, coordinated the camp.

In addition to learning about career opportunities in pharmacy and the pharmacy education curriculum at KU, camp participants were taught to conduct blood glucose, cholesterol and hypertension screening, prescription compounding techniques and the prescription dispensing process. Camp participants also spent a day touring area hospital, retail and specialty pharmacies as well as pharmacy research facilities at KU.

The program also provided information about academic and career planning for a future in the pharmacy profession.

Two KU pharmacy students, Andrew Huskey of Lincoln, and Emily Prohaska of Atchison were camp counselors. Both are sixth-year pharmacy students in KU’s six-year doctor of pharmacy program. Huskey is the son of James and Anita Huskey in Lincoln, and Prohaska is the daughter of Larry and Nancy Prohaska of Atchison.

“Our pharmacy camp program traditionally attracts highly qualified students, many of whom decide to attend KU to pursue a degree in pharmacy,” Hotchkiss said.

The camp program presentations, lectures and hands-on experiential activities were presented and conducted by pharmacy faculty and pharmacist practitioners from Lawrence and other communities in Kansas.
