Campus Heritage Plan wins award for excellence in preservation
LAWRENCE — A plan designed to preserve the University of Kansas’ historic campus and guide its future development has been honored by the Kansas Preservation Alliance with a Preservation Advocacy Award for Excellence.
The award, presented at the alliance’s 30th anniversary celebration June 4 in Topeka, honors individuals or groups for commitment to historic preservation in Kansas. KU was among three recipients of the awards for preservation advocacy, and nine awards for rehabilitation of historic projects were presented to sites across the state.
Jeff Weinberg, assistant to the chancellor, accepted the award for KU.
“It was a wonderful surprise to receive this award,” Weinberg said. “Many talented people who are dedicated to preserving the history, character and beauty of KU’s campus worked very hard on this plan, and we are grateful to the Kansas Preservation Alliance.”
KU Endowment received a $130,000 grant from the Getty Foundation to develop the Campus Heritage Plan to preserve the historic character of what is commonly described as one of the most beautiful college campuses in the United States and guide future university leaders in deciding the physical makeup of the university.
A steering committee of university and community leaders completed the plan last fall. KU faculty and staff, KU Endowment and KU Alumni Association officials, members of the Lawrence business community, neighborhood associations and historic preservation groups were all represented on the steering committee.
The University of Kansas is a major comprehensive research and teaching university. University Relations is the central public relations office for KU's Lawrence campus.
