Students win awards from Department of Applied Behavioral Science

LAWRENCE — Ten outstanding students in the Department of Applied Behavioral Science at the University of Kansas were recognized at a ceremony May 16.

Four students received Helen Jedlicka Mandigo Scholarships, which provide $500 to students completing yearlong practicum experiences in their selected specialty programs. The scholarships were named for a 1935 KU graduate who established the scholarship in 2004 with KU Endowment.

Four more students received plaques recognizing outstanding work within their areas of academic specialty, including early childhood education, youth development and justice, community health and development or autism and adults with developmental disabilities.

Two students in the department also received Harley S. Nelson Family Scholarships, $1,500 merit-based scholarships for students studying humanities or social sciences. The scholarship honors the family of KU alumnus John M. Nelson. Nelson received his bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in education from KU.

The funds for these scholarships and awards are managed by KU Endowment, the independent, nonprofit foundation serving as the official fundraising and fund-management organization for KU. Founded in 1891, KU Endowment is the first foundation of its kind at a U.S. public university.
