10 KU students working this spring as interns in Washington, D.C.

LAWRENCE — Ten students from the University of Kansas are earning academic credit while working in the nation’s capital this spring through KU’s Washington Intern Program, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year.

Throughout the semester, the students work for congressional representatives, think-tank scholars, lobbyists and consultants in Washington, D.C. Burdett Loomis, professor of political science and director the program, said the students locate internships on their own.

Interns can earn up to 12 hours of credit for participating in the program, which includes a weekly seminar. They have the option to pursue independent study, which includes writing a research paper. Stephene Moore, wife of U.S. Rep. Dennis Moore, D-Kan., coordinates the seminars.

The Washington Intern Program began in 1984. More than 500 students, mostly from KU but also from Wichita State University and other Kansas Board of Regents universities, have participated in this intensive, semester-long experience. Internships ordinarily run from mid-January to May 1 but can vary in length depending on the assignment.

Five Wichita State students are enrolled in the program this semester. Billye Griffith is working at Fraioli and Associates; Carly Miller at the American Conservative Union; Cortney Howard at the Capitol Association; Angela Scott at the Children’s Defense Fund; and Brandon Hottman at the Cato Institute.
