University Women’s Club presents three scholarships to KU students

LAWRENCE — Three women students at the University of Kansas have received scholarships worth $2,500 each for the 2009-10 academic year from the University Women’s Club.
The recipients are
— Karen Ruth Buhler, a master’s degree student in special education from Lawrence and Topeka
— Sylvia “May” Davis, senior in journalism from Clay Center
— Carolyn Regimand, junior in public administration from Olathe

They were chosen based on academic achievement, community service and need. The recipients were honored at an April luncheon. Mary Beth Petr, scholarship chair and newly installed president of the University Women’s Club, presented the scholarships.
Founded in 1900, the University Women’s Club has given about $90,000 in scholarships to KU female undergraduate and graduate students since 1915, making it the longest continuous scholarship-awarding unit at KU. Members are current or former full-time faculty or staff or the spouses of faculty or staff at KU or other institutions of higher education. Barbara Schowen, professor emerita of chemistry, is past president.

CLAY COUNTY
From Clay Center 67432
Sylvia “May” Davis tutors for Kansas Athletics and has served her sorority Alpha Chi Omega as recording secretary, personal development chair, Rock Chalk director and public relations director. She is active in College Republicans and has served as an attorney for KU Mock Trial. May is a Student Senate member and has served on the senate’s Student Housing Advisory Board and Transportation Board, where she helped create and implement the SafeBus service. She has also had appointments to the Parking Commission, Campus Safety Advisory Board and University Events Committee. She chairs the Newspaper Readership Advisory Board and is vice chairperson of the Academic Policies and Procedures Committee. She is the daughter of Duncan and Kim Davis and is a graduate of Clay Center Community High School.
DOUGLAS COUNTY
From Lawrence 66044 and Topeka
Karen Buhler is graduating with a bachelor’s in unified early childhood education this May. She will immediately begin graduate work toward a master’s degree in special education and will student teach next year. Buhler has worked as a research/data assistant for the Child Language Acquisition Studies Lab and is working for the Department of Special Education. She is a Watkins-Berger Scholar and a member of the University Honors Program. She is also an active member of the Latter-day Saints Student Association and adviser for a summer camp for girls ages 12-18. She is married to Adam Buhler of Lawrence. Her parents are John and Carol Christensen of Topeka. She is a Topeka High School graduate.
JOHNSON COUNTY
From Olathe 66062
Carolyn Regimand works full time at an Olathe high school and attends classes on the Edwards Campus. She will graduate in fall 2010 with a bachelor’s in public administration. Regimand is a military veteran with five and a half years of service in the U.S. Air Force. She is married and has two children. Regimand is a member of the Student Advisory Board for the Edwards Campus and participates in the KU City Managers and Trainees Organization for Undergraduates, Graduates and Doctoral Students. She volunteers with Junior Girl Scout Troop 110 and participates in charity runs throughout the Kansas City metropolitan area. She is a graduate of the Canton (Pa.) Area Jr.-Sr. High School.
