LAWRENCE — Sun-young Ju, a doctoral student in piano at the University of Kansas, received second prize in the concerto division of the 2009 Liszt-Garrison Festival and International Piano Competition held Oct. 14-18 in Washington, D.C.

Ju performed John Corigliano’s “Fantasia on an Ostinato” and Liszt’s “Second Piano Concerto” in the finals.

“I entered this competition to compete with many great pianists and the power of their spirits, which shined beyond my expectations,” said Ju.

The Liszt-Garrison Festival and International Piano Competition was founded in 2004 in memory of William Garrison, a pianist and former director of the Baltimore Men’s Chorus. The festival includes piano competitions, lectures, master classes and performances featuring world-renowned musicians.

Ju, of Seoul, South Korea, studies under Jack Winerock, professor of piano at KU. She earned a master’s degree in music from KU and a bachelor’s in music from Ewha Womans University in Seoul.

Ju won the KU Concerto Competition in November and will perform a Liszt concerto with the KU Symphony Orchestra in February.

Ju received first prize at the 9th St. Philharmonia Orchestra Concerto Competition and honorable mention from American Protégé International Piano and String Competition in 2009. She also was a semifinalist at the Grieg Young Artists Competition in 2009. In 2006, as the winner of the Young Artists Competition in Hays Symphony Orchestra, she performed Liszt’s second piano concerto with the Hays Symphony Orchestra. In 2005 and 2006, Ju won the Kansas City Musical Club Scholarship Audition and in 2005 won the KU Concerto Competition and performed with KU Symphony Orchestra. She received honorable mention in 2003 at the Graduate Collegiate Piano Competition sponsored by Kansas Music Teachers Association.
