KU music student named semifinalist in renowned opera competition
LAWRENCE — Joseph Eidson, a doctoral student at the University of Kansas, recently was chosen as a semifinalist in the 2010 Vista Competition for contemporary chamber opera.
The competition is held annually. Six to eight semifinalists are chosen to have excerpts from their operatic compositions performed in front of a live audience.
In the spring, Opera Vista, based in Houston, Texas, will perform an excerpt of Eidson’s winning composition, “Bamboo Cutter and the Moon.” A panel of judges and members of the audience will discuss the works with the composers and narrow the finalists down to two competitors who then will perform live.
The winner will receive $1,500 and his/her full opera will be staged at the 2011 Vista Festival. The second place composer will receive $1,000.
“I look forward to traveling to Houston to work with Opera Vista in the spring,” said Eidson. “Hopefully, the judges and audience will be receptive to the magical world of ‘Bamboo Cutter and the Moon.’ ”
Eidson received a bachelor’s in music theory from KU in spring 2004 and a master’s degree from the University of Texas-Austin in fall 2006. He is the son of Susan Eidson of Jefferson City, Mo., and Bill Eidson of McKinney, Texas. He is a graduate of Jefferson City High School.
The University of Kansas is a major comprehensive research and teaching university. University Relations is the central public relations office for KU's Lawrence campus.
