KU runs out of seasonal flu vaccine, cancels remaining clinic

More Information

LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas has canceled its one remaining seasonal influenza clinic scheduled for tomorrow because supplies were exhausted at clinics held last week and today.

Additional clinics for students, faculty, staff and retirees will be scheduled once supplies arrive. The university has ordered nearly 800 more doses, but a delivery date is unknown at this time. The university has administered about 1,250 doses of seasonal flu vaccine in just five clinics so far this fall. KU administered 2,117 doses of the vaccine in 12 clinics last year.

For university employees and retirees who are enrolled in a state health plan, the Kansas Health Policy Authority is offering 550 free seasonal flu shots at a clinic from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday Oct. 28, at the Courtside Room in the Burge Union. Employees must present their health plan cards and/or CVS Caremark cards at the clinic. Retirees in plans A and B as well as Medicare supplement plans are eligible. The vaccine is being offered on a first-come, first-serve basis. For more information, visit www.hreo.ku.edu and download the “KHPA Free Flu Shot Clinic” PDF.

The university announced earlier today it was canceling all but one of its H1N1 flu vaccine clinics because of a lack of supply. KU will offer 500 doses of the vaccine to students on a first-come, first-serve basis between noon and 2 p.m. Nov. 6 at the Ambler Student Recreation Fitness Center. The H1N1 vaccination is free. Most vaccines given will be nasal mists.

To be eligible for the H1N1 vaccine, students must show their KU Cards and be

— 24 years of age or younger
— 25 years of age and older with certain medical conditions, such as asthma and diabetes, that put them at higher risk for influenza-related complications

KU recommends pregnant students see their obstetricians for the H1N1 flu vaccine. Before coming to the H1N1 clinic, students are advised to download and complete a vaccine consent form at www.studenthealth.ku.edu.
