KU students promote study abroad after earning national Gilman scholarships

More Information

LAWRENCE — Three University of Kansas students are working to promote international education after winning federal scholarships to study abroad.

Jena K. Hartman, a senior from Beloit; Zachary Hoppenstedt, a junior from Manhattan; and Kimberly I. Moore, a junior from Paola, each won scholarships to study aboard in spring 2009 through the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship program.

The Gilman scholarship program aims to diversify the types of students who study abroad and their destinations. After studying abroad, scholarship winners must complete a follow-up educational project at their home institution or community.

The scholarship program is sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of State and administered by the Institute of International Education.

KU has promoted international exchange since the 1950s. A national leader in providing low-cost, high-quality study abroad programs, KU offers academic-year, semester, summer and short-term programs to qualified undergraduate and graduate students.

The Office of Study Abroad administers more than 100 programs in more than 70 countries. Students can study in Africa, the Americas, Asia, Australia and Europe.
