LAWRENCE — Thanks in part to a University of Kansas engineering graduate, Jayhawk faithful have a newly enhanced tool to find their way around campus on homecoming weekend.

While KU offers its own interactive map online, the Google Maps online service at maps.google.com now gives more information about the KU campus, such as landmarks and neighboring fraternity and sorority houses. The map service is under the direction of Brian McClendon, Google’s vice president of engineering and a 1986 electrical engineering graduate.

“We added new data to Google Maps, including detailed campus maps around the country,” said McClendon. “I’m personally quite excited to see detailed maps of University of Kansas now available for students, faculty, visitors and alumni. Whether you're trying to get to an engineering lab in Learned Hall or meeting a friend at GSP, we want Google Maps to help.”

KU and Wichita State University are the two Kansas universities mapped in the Google update.

Now, along with Jayhawk Boulevard and other street names, users can find specific halls, Potter Lake, Marvin Grove and even the tennis courts near the Robinson Center. Street views of most buildings on campus also provide another level of detail.

“From the development of Google Earth to this update to Google Maps, Brian continues to make the School of Engineering and the University of Kansas proud,” said Stuart R. Bell, engineering dean. “He is a Jayhawk through and through, and it shows in the success he has achieved.”

KU’s own interactive campus map at www.maps.ku.edu offers the ability to search by building names, abbreviations, addresses and departments. It also provides bus stop locations and parking lots denoted by their designated color parking permit zones. KU’s map also provides building history and links to the units that occupy the building.
