LAWRENCE — Student Health Services at the University of Kansas is offering the first of a series of clinics for seasonal flu vaccinations.

Clinic hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 2, at the lobby in the Burge Union. Flu shots cost $15 each.

A limited amount of vaccine for seasonal flu, not H1N1 flu, is available this week and more is on order. More clinics will be announced later.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends a yearly seasonal flu vaccine as the first and most important step in protecting against seasonal flu. Seasonal flu vaccine protects against the three seasonal viruses that research suggests will be most common. Students with chronic medical conditions are encouraged to get flu vaccinations early.

About 15 members of KU’s Academy of Student Pharmacists have volunteered to help with the first clinics offered by Student Health Services.

The volunteers are advanced pharmacy students who are certified to give vaccinations under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist with vaccination certification. Robert Emerson, director of experiential education in pharmacy and faculty adviser to the group, will be the supervising pharmacist.

Amanda Applegate, a senior from Wichita, is arranging for members of the group to staff the first clinics.
