KU to honor 244 high school seniors from southern Johnson County on Oct. 7

LAWRENCE — Students from eight Kansas high schools will be honored Wednesday, Oct. 7, by the University of Kansas Alumni Association and KU Endowment.
A total of 244 seniors from high schools in southern Johnson County will be recognized for their academic achievements and named Kansas Honor Scholars at a 7 p.m. reception at St. Thomas Aquinas High School, 11411 Pflumm Road., Overland Park.
The Kansas Honors Program began in 1971 and has honored more than 107,000 students. Scholars rank in the top 10 percent of their high school senior classes and are selected regardless of occupational plans or higher-education goals. Honorees are listed below.
During the ceremony, each student will receive an American Heritage Dictionary, in both hardback and electronic versions, presented by Joy Maxwell, assistant director of Kansas City programs for the KU Alumni Association.
Barbara Atkinson, executive vice chancellor of the KU Medical Center, will speak to the students and their parents and guests. Parents and area alumni are welcome to attend.
Community volunteers collect reservations, coordinate details and serve as local contacts for the event. Mark and Elaine Corder, Olathe, will be the site coordinators and county coordinators for Johnson County. The other county coordinator is Elaine Villejos, Olathe.
The Kansas Honors Program is made possible through the KU Endowment and proceeds from the Jayhawk License Plate program.
