Eight students win Gilman scholarships to study abroad in spring 2011

LAWRENCE — Eight students from the University of Kansas have received Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarships, prestigious awards for study abroad during the 2010-11 academic year.

Eight is the highest number of Gilman scholarships ever awarded to KU students in one semester.

The congressionally funded Gilman program aims to diversify the kinds of students who study abroad and the countries and regions to which they go. The program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and administered by the Institute of International Education’s Southern Regional Center in Houston, Texas.

The new Gilman scholarship recipients are listed below by hometown, level in school, major, parents’ names, high schools and where they will study.

DOUGLAS COUNTY

Jillian Marie Strobel, senior in Spanish and dance; Anne and Jeff Strobel; Great Bend High School; spring semester at the University of Costa Rica in San Jose.

ELLIS COUNTY

Joseph Michael Pince, sophomore in computer engineering; Kathy Pince; Hays High School; spring semester at the University of Newcastle in Australia.

RILEY COUNTY

William Drew Anderson, junior in Spanish and international studies; Brian and Cindy Anderson; Manhattan High School; spring semester at the University of Costa Rica in San Jose.

RUSSELL COUNTY
