Visual art faculty to showcase work

More Information

LAWRENCE — A show highlighting the works of 30 faculty members in the Department of Visual Art opens Sunday, Jan. 24, at the Art and Design Gallery at the University of Kansas.

The Visual Art Faculty Show opens with a public reception from 2 to 4 p.m. Jan. 24. The show runs through Feb. 5.

This will mark the first time the newly reshaped Department of Visual Art will present an exhibition of faculty work. When the School of Fine Arts was reorganized, the department gained colleagues from the former crafts programs — textiles, metals and ceramics — and the visual art education program. The department now is part of the new School of the Arts housed within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

“We’re all looking forward to the exhibit with great anticipation,” said department chair Dawn Guernsey.

The faculty members represent the programs of ceramics, expanded media, metalsmithing and jewelry, painting, printmaking, sculpture, textiles and visual art education.

Liz Kowalchuk, associate dean for the School of the Arts, said the exhibition illustrates the high caliber of the faculty work and communicates an important message about the variety of artistic media and ideas explored in the department.

“All it takes is a glimpse of these talented artists’ amazing works to know that our students are receiving an arts education among the best in the nation,” Kowalchuk said.

The Art and Design Gallery, Room 302 in the Art and Design Building, is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Wednesday; 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday; 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday and 1 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday.

The School of the Arts is home to four departments: dance; film and media studies; theatre; and visual art. As part of the largest academic unit on campus, the School of the Arts has the opportunity to inspire and increase participation in the arts among the Lawrence and KU community. This partnership also offers fresh possibilities for collaboration between the arts and the broad disciplines of the College, paving the way for unique innovations and ideas.
