Three students win Gilman scholarships to study abroad
LAWRENCE — Three University of Kansas students have been awarded prestigious scholarships for study abroad during the 2010-11 academic year.
Jeffrey Dustin Heinzman, Jaymes Tyler Jarman and Korey James Keen were awarded Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarships.
The congressionally funded Gilman program aims to diversify the kinds of students who study abroad and the countries and regions to which they go. The program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and administered by the Institute of International Education’s Southern Regional Center in Houston, Texas.
The scholarship recipients are listed below by hometown, level in school, major, parents’ names, high schools and where they will study.
JACKSON COUNTY
From Holton 66436
Korey James Keen, junior in East Asian languages and cultures with a concentration in Japanese language and literature; son of Karla S. Bylund; Holton High School; academic year at Sophia University in Tokyo, Japan.
MONTGOMERY COUNTY
From Coffeyville 67337
Jaymes Tyler Jarman, senior in foreign language education; son of Bonnie Maitlen; Field Kindley Memorial High School; academic year at J.F. Oberlin University in Tokyo, Japan.
WYANDOTTE COUNTY
From Kansas City 66103
Jeffrey Dustin Heinzman, senior in chemistry with an international studies co-major; son of David and Josephine Heinzman; Bishop Miege High School; fall 2010 at University of Hyderabad in Hyderabad, India.
The University of Kansas is a major comprehensive research and teaching university. University Relations is the central public relations office for KU's Lawrence campus.
