Students win awards from Department of Applied Behavioral Science
LAWRENCE — Twelve students in the Department of Applied Behavioral Science were recognized for their academic achievements this spring with several awards.
Undergraduate students who received the department’s Outstanding Achievement Awards, Helen Jedlicka Mandigo scholarships and Harley S. Nelson Family Scholarships were honored at an awards ceremony May 15.
Five students received Helen Jedlicka Mandigo Student Scholarships in Human Development and Family Life, which provide $500 to students completing yearlong practicum experiences in their selected specialty programs. The scholarships were named for a 1935 KU graduate who established the scholarship in 2004 through KU Endowment.
Plaques were handed out to four students to recognize outstanding achievement within their areas of academic specialty, including early childhood education, youth development and justice, community health and development or autism and adults with developmental disabilities.
In addition, two students received Harley S. Nelson Family Scholarships, $1,500 merit-based scholarships for students studying humanities or social sciences. The scholarship honors the family of KU alumnus John M. Nelson, who received his bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in education from KU.
Graduate students received accolades in the spring as well. Kimberly Zonneveld and Matthew H. Newquist, with assistant professors Claudia Dozier and Pamela Neidert as advisers, were recognized for Best Graduate Student Poster from the Kansas Association for Behavior Analysis in April. Also, Kaston Anderson received a Graduate Diversity Fellowship.
The funds for the Jedlicka Mandigo and Nelson scholarships and Outstanding Achievement Awards are managed by KU Endowment, the independent, nonprofit foundation serving as the official fundraising and fund-management organization for KU. Founded in 1891, KU Endowment was the first foundation of its kind at a U.S. public university.
