College of Liberal Arts and Sciences bestows $29,000 in scholarships, awards
LAWRENCE — The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Kansas honored 15 students with $28,800 in scholarships and awards this spring.
The scholarships and awards were available to outstanding undergraduates in the College during the 2009-10 academic year. The scholarships and awards, which are made possible by gifts to KU Endowment from alumni and friends, were awarded based on merit, need or both. The recipients were selected from a pool of more than 100 applicants.
“The selection committee was charged with a difficult task because all the students who applied are outstanding scholars,” said Interim Dean Gregory B. Simpson. “To be selected is quite a prestigious achievement.”
Several general scholarships or awards were available, in addition to other scholarships and awards with specific criteria.
Scholarships provide funds that may be used for tuition expenses only. Awards provide cash that may be used without restrictions.
The general scholarships and awards are given to students in any major who exhibit exceptional merit: the Grace Caroline Eaton Scholarship for male sophomores; the Paul B. Lawson Award for a junior; and the Verne I. Wagner Bratton Memorial Scholarship for juniors or seniors. Other scholarships and awards made by the College include:
— Allen S. Wilber Scholarship, awarded to graduating seniors to assist them in pursuing graduate study at KU with a preference given to students planning graduate work in a social science field or modern languages and literature
— Betty Wahlstedt Student Memorial Award, given to a graduating senior planning graduate study in the behavioral sciences
— Engelmann Science Scholarship, given to a sophomore or junior studying science who exhibits exceptional merit
— Hilden Gibson Award, given to a junior or senior who is planning to continue his or her education at KU after graduation with outstanding scholarship in the social sciences
— Kate Stephens Fellowship Award, given to a graduating senior planning graduate studies in literature, history or ethics
— Max A. Miller Medical Scholarship, awarded to students preparing to study medicine who have demonstrated above-average academic ability and a serious intent to complete all academic requirements to obtain a medical degree
— Veta B. Lear Memorial Award, given to a freshman with a 4.0 grade-point average during his or her first year
The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences enrolls more than 17,000 students and encompasses more than 55 departments, programs, centers and the School of the Arts. Nearly half of the students at KU earn their bachelor’s degrees from the College. Courses in the College cover hundreds of subjects including history, literature, chemistry, biology, art history, mathematics, anthropology, psychology, foreign language and political science.
Funds for the awards and scholarships are managed by KU Endowment, the independent, nonprofit foundation serving as the official fundraising and fund-management organization for KU. Founded in 1891, KU Endowment was the first foundation of its kind at a U.S. public university.
