Geology department announces awards to undergraduate, graduate students
LAWRENCE — The Department of Geology at the University of Kansas recognized 58 outstanding students with more than $100,000 in scholarships and awards.
“These scholarships and awards have been made possible by the generous contributions of the department’s alumni, friends and corporate donors,” said Luis González, department chair. “They are providing essential support for students pursuing summer fieldwork and field courses. Fieldwork is an important component of geology education and research.”
Twenty-one undergraduates and one doctoral student received scholarships to support participation in summer geology courses. Twenty-eight graduate students received summer research scholarships.
The named awards and scholarships include
— Erasmus Haworth Outstanding Student Award, given to graduating seniors, master’s and doctoral students in recognition of their academic achievements and contributions to the department
— Roger Kaesler Memorial Scholarship, which supports research of an outstanding student in paleontology
— Merriam Research Award, which supports graduate field research in areas of sedimentary geology
— Stelbar Oil Corporation Award, which supports research of an outstanding student working in disciplines related to the energy industry
— Marathon Research Award, which supports research of an outstanding student working in disciplines related to the energy industry
Two rising sophomores received the first Alec Waggoner Memorial Scholarships. The scholarship was named for a KU geology graduate who died in 2008, only 15 months after earning his bachelor’s degree.
Four undergraduates were recognized with academic year scholarships for 2010-11.
Eleven students received Field Geology Summer Camp Scholarships to attend the geology department’s camp near Cañon City, Colo. The field camp has been in operation since 1922, accommodates about 30 students and teaches students to deal with exposures of rock that are larger than hand specimens and smaller than mountain ranges.
The awards and scholarships support undergraduate and graduate students seeking degrees in the geology departments programs for geobiology, geophysics, glaciology, hydrogeology, paleontology, sedimentary geology and tectonics.
KU Endowment manages the funds for awards and scholarships presented by the geology department. KU Endowment is the independent, nonprofit organization serving as the official fundraising and fund-management organization for KU. Founded in 1891, KU Endowment was the first foundation of its kind at a U.S. public university
