Influential alumni celebrate experiences possible with a liberal arts education
LAWRENCE — Recipients of the 2009-10 Alumni Distinguished Achievement Awards will return to the University of Kansas campus Friday, April 9, to share and celebrate the experiences made possible with a liberal arts and sciences education from KU.
KU’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences will host winners of the award, the highest honor bestowed by the College on its graduates. Recipients include an acclaimed artist, a baseball consultant, a television executive and a U.S. cabinet secretary.
During the annual Deans Club Banquet at 5:30 p.m. April 9 in the Kansas Union ballroom, Gregory B. Simpson, interim dean of the College, will present awards to Ann Hamilton, of Columbus, Ohio; Bill James, of Lawrence; and Kathleen Sebelius, of Washington, D.C. Steve Mills, of Beverly Hills, Calif., will be honored with the award through a video tribute. Donors who supported the College with a gift of $1,000 or more in the last year are invited to the banquet.
Two public events designed for students, faculty, staff and members of the public will showcase the diverse accomplishments of the recipients.
Visual artist Hamilton will discuss her work at 5 p.m. Thursday, April 8, at the Spencer Museum of Art. The event is free and open to the public and sponsored by the Spencer Museum of Art. Hamilton has the distinction of being the first distinguished alumni recipient from the new School of the Arts housed within the College.
James, an acclaimed baseball researcher and senior adviser to the Boston Red Sox, will present a lecture titled “Battling Expertise with the Power of Ignorance” at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 13, in 120 Snow Hall as part of Mathematics Awareness Month. The event is free and open to the public and sponsored by the Department of Mathematics.

The Alumni Distinguished Achievement Awards are presented annually to select graduates of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the School of the Arts. The awards recognize professional achievements, dedication to community and involvement with KU. Selection of recipients is made by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Advisory Board. The College enrolls more than 18,000 students and encompasses more than 55 departments, programs and centers and the new School of the Arts. Nearly half of the students at KU earn their bachelor’s degrees from the College.
