LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas honored student athletes named to the Athletics Director’s Honor Roll for 2009 during halftime of the KU-Baylor University men’s basketball game Jan. 20 at Allen Fieldhouse.

Student athletes who achieved a grade-point average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale and were enrolled during the spring or fall 2009 semesters are eligible for the honor. During the spring semester, 218 qualified. In the fall, 275 qualified.

Receiving special recognition were students who earned 4.0 GPAs in one or both semesters. Thirty-six students had 4.0 GPAs during the spring semester and 34 in the fall semester. Twelve student athletes had 4.0 averages both semesters.

“These student athletes show remarkable determination,” Athletics Director Lew Perkins said. “It takes a special person to match athletic intensity with determination in the classroom. These grades are a credit to them, their professors and to our outstanding student-athlete support staff. We’re very proud of all of them.”

KU student athletes tied an all-time high for a fall term with a combined 2.99 GPA. Football reported a GPA of 2.73, the highest for that sport since record-keeping started in 1986.

Women’s golf had the highest GPA with a 3.43. Students in seven other sports recorded GPAs of 3.0 or higher: women’s cross country, women’s track and field, volleyball, rowing, swimming and diving, tennis and softball. Men’s basketball posted a GPA of 2.95.

The Athletics Director’s Honor Roll recognizes students in intercollegiate baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, rowing, softball, soccer, Spirit Squad, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field, and volleyball.

Honorees represent 33 Kansas counties, 32 other states and 13 other countries. They are listed below by home county, state or country; sport; semester of recognition; major; student status; and level in school or degree completed in 2009; and, when available, parents’ names and previous schools attended. Students who qualified both semesters are listed twice.
