KU announces 2010-11 orientation assistants, coordinators

More Information

LAWRENCE — Twenty-three students at the University of Kansas have been chosen as orientation assistants and orientation coordinators for this summer and the upcoming academic year.

The students will assist with summer and fall orientation programs as well as Hawk Week, Hawk Days and Rock Chalk Chow Downs.

Orientation assistants are hired through a process that includes essay writing, group interaction activities, a five-minute speech and final interview. The assistants prepare for orientation sessions by attending three weeks of training that covers KU academic and student services, public speaking, interaction with the public and diversity issues.

New Student Orientation programs are tailored to incoming students’ fields of study and offer information about KU to first-time freshmen, transfer students and readmitted students. The programs are designed to help students, parents and guests with their academic, social and personal transitions to KU and to reduce anxieties about attending college.

During the summer, there will be 12 freshman sessions, three transfer sessions and one readmit session. The two fall sessions include one for freshmen and one for transfer students.

Summer and fall orientation registration is available at orientation.ku.edu.

Three students will be orientation coordinators: Ashley Anguiano, a junior from Berryton; Annie Frizzell, a graduating senior from Prairie Village; and Mathew Shepard, a junior from Lenora.

Five students are returning for a second year as an orientation assistant: Josh DeBoer, a sophomore from Overland Park; Molly Iler, a junior from Summit, N.J.; Garrett Kelly, a senior from Leavenworth; Chris Paradies, a junior from Lawrence; and Ernest Shepard, a sophomore from Kansas City, Kan.
