LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas School of Engineering and Perceptive Software honored Shawnee Mission South High School mathematics teacher Vince LaVergne with an Educating Excellence award.

KU and Perceptive Software launched the Educating Excellence program in March 2010 to recognize outstanding Kansas and Kansas City-area high school science, technology, engineering and math teachers.

LaVergne was recognized for his ability to educate and encourage students to succeed in his classroom and beyond. Specifically, his record of preparing students to pass the calculus AP exam at rates well-above the state and national levels was highlighted by his nominators. LaVergne was also recognized for his ability to excite and inspire students to further their education in the areas of math and engineering.

Representatives from KU and Perceptive Software surprised LaVergne with the $1,500 award check during a special assembly Feb. 9 at Shawnee Mission South High School.

Each month throughout the 2010-11 academic year, a $1,500 award will be given to an outstanding Kansas or Kansas City-area teacher. Nine teachers in total will be recognized during the current academic year.

Nominations for fall 2011 awards are being accepted until Aug. 1. To nominate a Kansas or Kansas City-area science, technology, engineering or math teacher, visit www.educatingexcellence.org. After submitting a nomination, the nominator will be asked to provide three reference letters — one each from a current student, colleague and community member — by the Aug. 1 deadline.
