Theatre professor to direct tribute to President Kennedy
LAWRENCE — Jack B. Wright, professor of theatre at the University of Kansas, is staging a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the inauguration of President John F. Kennedy on Monday, Jan. 31, on the Millennium Stage at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.
Presented by the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival, the performance is part of “The Presidency of John F. Kennedy: A 50th Anniversary Celebration” being staged through Feb. 6. The celebration features performances by Music Director Christoph Eschenbach and the National Symphony Orchestra, American Ballet Theatre, Yo-Yo Ma, Denyce Graves, Emanuel Ax and others; a newly commissioned play for young audiences and their families based on two collections of poetry selected by Caroline Kennedy; a documentary; and performances on the Millennium Stage.
The Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival marked the anniversary by sponsoring a special scholarship program for short plays, monologues, soliloquies, songs and spoken word inspired by the life, presidency and legacy of the late president. The winning pieces are being performed by professional actors from the Washington, D.C., area.
The free live performance is at 5 p.m. Central Time and is being broadcast live at www.kennedy-center.org/explorer/live/.
