Because of a data reporting error, the University of Kansas has been incorrectly placed on a College Affordability and Transparency Center list of schools with high net costs.

Financial aid figures reported by the university to the national IPEDS database mistakenly did not include all of the aid available to KU students. This resulted in the inaccurately high figure in the center’s report. When the correct figures are used and all of KU’s scholarships, grants and aid are included, KU’s net yearly cost is $13,940. That’s $2,008 below the lowest priced school on the list.

“We’re obviously disappointed that an error like this will result in some students and families not getting the real picture of KU’s affordability,” said Jeffrey Vitter, Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor. “KU continues to be one of the most affordable national research universities to attend, and we again this year increased the amount of scholarships and aid available to our students.”

KU provided $72.1 million in grants and scholarships to 13,878 students in the 2009-10 academic year.

The College Affordability and Transparency Center is an initiative of the U.S. Department of Education. Vitter said that KU is asking the department to update the list to reflect the correct figures.
