LAWRENCE — Twenty-two high school students from four states are in Lawrence this week to participate in the 15th annual University of Kansas School of Pharmacy Summer Camp.

Eleven women and 11 men from Kansas, Missouri, Texas and Illinois are learning what pharmacists do in their daily routines; the education skills needed to become a pharmacist; and the code of ethics and professionalism standards that guide the pharmacy profession, said Gene Hotchkiss, associate dean for administration and pharmacy camp director.

In addition to learning about career opportunities in the pharmacy profession and the pharmacy education curriculum at KU, camp participants will learn how to conduct blood glucose, cholesterol and hypertension screening procedures; prescription compounding techniques; and the prescription dispensing process. They will also spend one day touring area hospital, retail and specialty pharmacies as well as pharmacy research facilities at KU.

The program also provides information about academic and career planning for a future in the pharmacy profession.

“Our pharmacy camp program traditionally attracts highly qualified students, many of whom decide to attend KU to pursue a degree in pharmacy,” Hotchkiss said.

The camp program presentations, lectures and hands-on experiential activities are presented and conducted by School of Pharmacy faculty and pharmacist practitioners from Lawrence and other communities in Kansas.

The camp has received national recognition as an innovative and exemplary program in enhancement of the recognition of pharmacy as a career pathway with a broad scope of opportunities available to pharmacy program graduates.

The 2011 camp received sponsorship support from Yash Patel, manager of college and professional relations for CVS Caremark/CVS Pharmacy, and Prescription Solutions in Overland Park.
